Soulsha is a party, a revolution, and an adventure through different traditions. It brings together some of Boston’s top musicians in Scottish, West African, and Funk music to create a sound you won’t find anywhere else on the planet. Soulful call and response singing, masterful improvisation, traditional Senegalese and Scottish dancing and incredible energy make every Soulsha show an unforgettable live experience. Intricate rhythms, soaring bagpipe melodies, and New Orleans-infused horn lines come together seamlessly, reminding us that we’re all in this together. The band formed through a series of serendipitous meetings in the thriving and intersecting multi-cultural melting pot of Boston. Many of the members are virtuosic and highly esteemed tradition-bearers in their styles. The music they’ve created is a conversation between cultures that breaks down all the boundaries, moving the audience to abandon their assumptions as they lose themselves on the dance floor. While it shares obvious roots with Afro-Celt Sound System’s electronic fusion, the funk-inspired sound of Soulsha puts tradition and interchange center stage, bringing the party energy of Rebirth Brass Band, and the cultural gravitas of masters like Malian Toumani Diabaté. The sound is fun but deep, fresh but familiar, immigrant and yet deeply American.
M’bolo, meaning “togetherness” in the Senegalese language Wolof, embraces this ethos in the creation of their high-octane hybrid of Mbalax and Rock. Lead singer/percussionist Cheikh Ngom began singing, dancing, and playing sabar drums at the age of four in the coastal city of Kaolack, Senegal. After performing throughout Africa and Europe, Ngom arrived in the United States, where he founded M’bolo with Dillon Zahner (guitar), Galen Willett (bass), Arone Ndiaye (keys), and Beza Gebre (drumset). Guitar, bass, keys, and drums fuse to form a rhythmically intricate lattice of propulsive licks, snaking leads, and hypnotizing grooves, punctuated by the rapid-fire attack of the sabar drums. Live shows are highlighted by the explosive energy of Ngom’s dance moves, fusing his Kaolack roots with a Michael Jackson flair. Their debut album, entitled M’bolo, captures the fiery spirit of their live shows as well as the incantations of their more introspective and meditative chansons.
Dis N Dat
Formed in 1999 by four time grammy nominated Black Uhuru drummer ‘Rangotan and 6 time steel pan champion Sista D, Dis-N-Dat has a unique sound, setting us apart from all the rest. Dis-N-Dat incorporates Roots Reggae, Dance Hall and R&B in to a sound all our own known as Neo-Reggae, moving audiences all over the U.S. for almost 20 years. We take the reggae to a new level, at the same time rocking the foundation sound that so many are looking for. The band has backed many international artists that include Queen Africa, Tony Rebel, Anthony B, Turbulence, Everton Blender, Sister Nancy, Yami Bolo, Lady Saw, Sasha and many more! The band also backed UK Reggae superstar Pato Banton for several tours across the United States. Dis-N-Dat continues to blaze a trail of vibes worldwide from our shows to our albums. Our shows are an experience to behold that cannot be compared to any other! Our most recent album ‘One Perfect Love’ hit #7 in the Reggae Charts and we look forward to releasing ’Straight Up’ in 2018.
